Recently, Fly To Sky Charity And Community Development Support Social Enterprise Company Limited and Fly To Sky Charity Organization (under the Vietnam National Volunteer Center (VVC) – Central Committee of the Ho Chi Minh Communist Youth Union) partnered with Adecco Vietnam to organize a Mid-Autumn lantern-making workshop at Adecco’s offices in Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City.
Rather than simply preparing and distributing ready-made gifts, the workshop allowed Adecco employees and volunteers to take part directly in making the lanterns. A total of 150 completed lanterns were prepared to be delivered to children at shelters and social protection facilities during the Mid-Autumn Festival.
When CSR activities involve direct participation
Community-oriented CSR initiatives do not necessarily have to begin with large-scale programs. Activities that allow employees to contribute their time, effort and creativity can provide a practical way to engage them in social responsibility while creating tangible outcomes for the community.
Through the lantern-making workshop, participants experienced a traditional handicraft activity while contributing to gifts that were later prepared for children in difficult circumstances. The activity created a direct connection between those involved in the program and the intended beneficiaries, rather than focusing solely on the distribution of material support.
For businesses, activities of this kind also offered an approach to CSR that was connected to internal organizational culture. Employees were able to participate directly in a social initiative, gain a better understanding of its purpose and recognize the role individuals could play in creating value for the community.
From a Mid-Autumn activity to community connection
The Mid-Autumn Festival is traditionally associated with activities for children. For children living in shelters and social protection facilities, receiving gifts and participating in festive activities can also provide a sense of care and connection with the wider community.
Although the lanterns made during the workshop did not have significant material value, they represented the time and effort contributed by the people who created them. When delivered to children, the handmade lanterns became part of the festive atmosphere and helped create joyful experiences for them during the Mid-Autumn Festival.
More broadly, the activity highlighted the role of CSR programs in creating opportunities for employees to participate in community initiatives. Instead of viewing CSR solely as financial sponsorship, businesses could also involve employees directly, making social responsibility a more tangible part of organizational culture and employee experience.
Small contributions, practical community value
The collaboration between Adecco Vietnam and Fly To Sky demonstrated how community initiatives could begin with simple activities that matched the resources and capacity of participating businesses.
The 150 handmade lanterns were a tangible outcome of the program. At the same time, the workshop created an opportunity for employees to participate, contribute their efforts and engage with the needs of children facing difficult circumstances.
When developed based on actual community needs, initiatives of this kind can contribute to a more participatory approach to corporate social responsibility, bringing together businesses, employees and communities to create shared social value.
